HOW OFTEN SHOULD I GET A MASSAGE?

One of the most frequently asked questions that I find I am being asked is “How often should I get a massage?” Well, as with any treatment, the answer depends on the person asking and the benefits he or she hopes to receive.


Here are some general guidelines that experienced massage therapists recommend:


1. GENERAL WELLNESS

If your aim if for general wellness, the recommended frequency is about once or twice a month. This allows people in generally good health to receive all the health benefits, and allows each massage to build upon the last so that you are not essentially starting over from scratch each time.

2. TREATMENT OF CHRONIC CONDITION

If you want a massage for the treatment of a chronic condition then you'll need to receive one more frequently to get the benefits and relief you are looking to acquire. It is recommended to start off with twice-weekly massages for the first four to six weeks, and then gradually increase the time between sessions as symptoms improve.


3. ENHANCED ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE

People heavily involved in sports should have a massage as often as two to three times per week during periods of intense training. Massages do help athletes reach peak physical fitness while giving some protection from injury and is, therefore, a necessary support mechanism for athletes.


4. STRESS RELIEF

For those individuals that are going through stressful times and leading high stress lives daily, it is recommended to get a massage every one to two weeks. Studies conducted on the benefits of massage have demonstrated that massage does help combat stress and anxiety.


The bottom line is that people who wish to treat specific medical conditions will need to have massages more frequently than those who want massages strictly for enjoyment and relaxation. But if you are looking to treat a specific condition, always consult your doctor first.
